Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is from the Asteraceae plant family. This is a well known medicinal plant, native to the Mediterranean region of Europe but also widely dispersed to many countries throughout the world. It has well documented medicinal effects such as liver and bile-related diseases remedy. There are many skin care benefits to be found in this spiky plant.

An active medical ingredient in milk thistle is silymarin, found in the milk thistle seed. Silymarin is a mixture of three flavonolignans (flavonoids) including silybin (silibinin), silidianin, and silichrystin which act as potent antioxidants.

ANTIOXIDANT – Benefits which help protect skin from sun damage and environmental pollution by increasing the strength of cell walls, making it more difficult for toxins to cross into the cell.

PIGMENTATION – A reduction in skin melanin by the suppression of the enzyme tyrosinase responsible for melanin production.

VITAMIN E – Offers protective benefits, and linoleic acid help restore the skin’s natural moisture barrier.

FATTY ACIDS – Milk thistle oil contains unsaturated fatty acids especially linoleic and oleic acids and sterols being high in Omega 9 // moderate Omega 6 // small amounts of Omega 3.

PROTECTIVE – Both silymarin and silybin offer protection against UVB-induced skin damages. Skin exposure to solar UV radiation induces photo-ageing both silymarin and silybin have been shown to exhibit preventive effects against photo-ageing.

DERMATITIS – Topical application of silymarin reduces chemical-induced irritant contact dermatitis. Shown to be safe and effective in reducing facial redness associated with rosacea.

FREE RADICAL SCAVENGER – As effective as vitamin C or vitamin E, milk thistle helps fight free radical damage and helps stop premature ageing.

WOUND HEALING – Topical administration of silymarin ointments have been effective in the treatment of diabetic wounds.

Recent Studies

2016 – Milk Thistle Seed Oil contains silymarin flavonoids including silibinin, silidianin and silichrystin, which may exert antioxidative activity and show potential anti-aging effects as a cosmetic cream formulation by decreasing transepidermal water loss and surface wrinkles.

2011 – Study reveals that a stable topical cream (water in oil emulsion) containing Milk thistle (S. marianum) extract can be produced which can be cost effective with no harmful effects. The formulation was observed to have skin moisturizing effects as it causes an increase in skin moisture content.

2011– A study showed that an active formulation containing extract of milk thistle reduced skin melanin due to the presence of silymarin flavonoids. The formulation also possessed anti-inflammatory effects and was found to be suitable for topical application. The decline in skin melanin can be credited to the polyphenolic flavanoids present in milk thistle which include silymarin comprising of silibinin, silydianine, silychristine and other flavonolignans . Tyrosinase is the enzyme responsible for melanin biosynthesis. Silymarin significantly prevent melanin production in melanocyte cells through inhibition of tyrosinase expression due to which skin whitening effects were observed.
